Last modified on Oct 17, 2013

The human-caused Shingle Fire, which started near Swain''s Creek on Cedar Mountain late Sunday afternoon July 1, has burned over 5000 acres, as of late Monday night, July 2. The fire has everyone frightened as to its potential for serious destruction to cabins and private property on Cedar Mountain.

"This is a very fluid fire. It's got a lot of fuel in which to burn from," said inter-agency fire information officer Mark Wilkening said.

Kane County Commissioner Jim Matson said the county and firefighters had worked hard to bulldoze anchor lines to stop the fire, but dead trees and old snags caused breaches. He said that a focus was placed on protecting private property.

As of late Monday night there have been no structures harmed yet. Mandatory evacuations are in effect for the Swains Creek, Stout Canyon, Ponderosa, Elk Ridge and Harris Flat subdivisions southeast of Cedar City. People camping in Uinta Flat have been advised to leave but have not been ordered to evacuate. The flames have also shut down state Route 14 from Mammoth Junction to U.S. 89, as well as numerous Forest Service road closures in the fire area. Hwy 89 to remain open for now. Possible closure of Hwy 89 from Hwy 20 to Hwy 9

Two hundred plus firefighters are battling the blaze, with two helicopters and two fixed-wing airplanes lending support.

The fire is threatening a major electrical utility line that feeds power to Nevada and California. Power shut down on purpose so firefighters can fight fire safely around power lines.

Temperatures were in the mid-80s despite the fire being at an elevation of 9000 feet. Dry thunderstorms, with wind gusts of up to 35-40 miles per hour, were predicted for the next two days.
