Fox 13 News Reports ‘Mountain man’ burglary suspec

A man who has allegedly broken into a number of Utah cabins and evaded law enforcement for several years has been captured.

Troy James Knapp was arrested on the border of Emery and Sanpete Counties, according to Iron County Sheriff Mark Gower. The arrest occurred on Ferron Mountain, Gower said.

Knapp, who has been known to be fairly heavily armed at times, may have fired shots at a Department of Public Safety helicopter involved in the capture.

“It’s my understanding that there was some shots fired at one of the DPS helicopters,” said Garfield County Sheriff Danny Perkins in an interview Tuesday afternoon. “But no one was hurt and he was taken into custody unharmed.”

Knapp has allegedly been raiding backcountry cabins in several counties across Utah for nearly seven years. He faces formal charges in three counties and is being investigated by several other sheriff’s departments.

From Kane County in the south, to Sanpete County in the north, Knapp managed to stay one step ahead of the law until Tuesday.

Most of Knapp’s alleged hideouts were hovels constructed of branches and woodland debris, while some are simply holes dug into the ground. A hideout discovered in Sevier County, police say, looks to have been abandoned more than a year ago.

Police believe Knapp may have had a loose network of such hideouts.
